Hundreds flee fire in Colorado

Fern Lake fire whipped by 70 mph winds

FORT COLLINS, Colo. | December 2, 2012

A roaring wildfire whipped by 70 mph winds sent hundreds of people fleeing from their homes in Colorado Saturday, officials said.

The Fern Lake fire started Oct. 9 but hadn't been considered particularly threatening until it suddenly raced through 3 miles of forest in a half hour, the Los Angeles Times reported. That prompted authorities to order more than 500 Larimer County residents to evacuate.

Two air tankers were brought in to battle the blaze, which has now blackened more than 4,400 acres and at least one cabin, and by later in the day it was about 40 percent contained, the newspaper said.
