Dengue fever spreading in Yemen

Poorest social classes in western city of Hodeida affected

SANAA, Yemen | May 17, 2012

Dengue fever has been spreading among the poorest social classes in Yemen's western city of Hodeida, health officials said Thursday.

Dengue fever has swept through Hodeida Central Security Prison and an African refugee camp because of poor sanitation and diet, health officials said.

Seventy cases have been reported in the detention center and 115 in the Ethiopian refugee camp run by the International Migration Organization, the Yemen Times reported.

Symptoms of dengue fever, which is spread through mosquito bites, include sudden fever and severe muscle cramps.
