Engines for the California Zephyr derailed Friday after hitting a farm vehicle

BENKELMAN, NE (UPI) | August 26, 2011

Two locomotives and three rail cars of an Amtrak train were derailed near the Nebraska-Kansas border after colliding with a farm vehicle, Amtrak officials said.

There were no reports of life-threatening injuries to the estimated 178 passengers or the train's crew in Friday's 9:50 a.m. EDT incident, an Amtrak release said.

Passengers were transported to a nearby high school in Benkelman, Nebraska., to be cared for and await transportation to their destination.

The eastbound California Zephyr was en route from Emeryville, Calif., to Chicago, having departed the San Francisco Bay area on Wednesday.
