Softball-size hail batters KS

Early reports indicate many trees down but limited damage to structures as farmers worry about crops

WICHITA, KS | September 15, 2010

This Witchita area resident shows off the size of Wednesday afternoon hail compared to hardballs.

Supercell thunderstorms hit southcentral and southeast Kansas Wednesday nignt bringing devastating hail and wind damage to crops across the region. According to early reports, hail from four to seven inches was reported.

A number of tornadoes have also been reported and electric power is out across a wide swath of both states. Emergency crews were assessing the damage Wednesday night.

The weather front that brought the severe weather to Kansas swept across Missouri Wednesday night bringing the threat of more tornadoes and flooding. This month has already been one of the wettest Septembers in Missouri on record.
