Hundreds of homes damaged in storms

Tornadoes, flooding, damage homes from MS to New York.

Disaster response to tornadoes, severe wind damage and flash flooding in communities from Mississippi to Upper New York State punctuated the first weekend in August.

The most damage in a single area was reported in Mississippi late last week where four counties reported damage to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). A spokesperson for MEMA said 49 homes received major damage and 177 others had less serious damage. Residents in Desoto County who were unable to return to their homes found shelter at the Longview Heights Baptist Church in Olive Branch.

In Cordova, TN, the Tennessee Office of Preparedness reported more than 125 structures sustained damage. Most of the damage was to roofs and storage sheds. The Rev. David Acres, with the Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief, said Monday his group has responded with chainsaw teams to help clean-up fallen trees.

Tornadoes were also reported in Maryland and New York.

A spokesperson from the National Weather Service said a small tornado caused minor damage in Kirkwood, MD, near the Pennsylvania border, and that the agency was also investigating reports of a tornado in nearby Windsor.

More than 51,000 customers including a major Baltimore area hospital lost power Friday night after high winds and a tornado downed trees and damaged homes northwest of the city. Tornadoes were also reported in Frederick County, in western Maryland.

In addition to winds, several small towns near Philadelphia received nearly five inches of rain Sunday. The National Weather Service reported that all the rain came down in only a few hours resulting in flooded roads and trapped cars.

Amazingly, only a few minor injuries were reported in all of the severe weather events.
