New swine flu cases prompt warning

Health officials worry that the flu, now spreading from human to human, coud develop into a pandemic.

BALTIMORE | April 26, 2009

As new cases of the deadly swine flu virus were diagnosed in the United States Saturday, the World Health Organization said the spreading disease is a "public helath event of international concern."

The virus has been blamed on the deaths of 68 people in Mexico where health officials have suspended schools and banned public events in Mexico City and other regions of the country.

Health officials said the newest U.S. cases were reported in Kansas and a flu outbreak at a private school in New York City may also be related.

In Mexico more than 1,000 people have been diagnosed with the illness.

Medical experts are warning that the swine virus, unchecked, could spark a global pandemic.
