Pastor killed during church service

Assailant captured, injured, by parishioners before IL police arrive.

BALTIMORE | March 8, 2009

A church pastor in Maryville, IL, was shot and killed during a Sunday morning worship service according to an Illinois State Police spokesman. The shooting happened at First Maryville Baptist Church during the 8 a.m. service.

Authorities reported church members wrestled the gunman to the ground. Two members of the church were injured by a knife while trying to detain the suspect. The suspect was also injured. Three people were transported to St. Louis University Hospital and one was dead on arrival, according to a hospital spokesperson. The suspect was one of the three taken to the hospital.
