Indonesia confirms 76th bird flu death

Woman, 26, dies after eating infected chicken.

JAKARTA | May 14, 2007

A 26-year-old Indonesian woman has died of bird flu, raising the death toll in Indonesia from the H5N1 virus to 76, officials reported Monday.

The woman, who was pregnant, had eaten an infected chicken a week before becoming ill.

Her death was reported the same day as the World Health Organization (WHO) opened its World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. A key focus of the 10-day meeting was expected to be on Indonesia's refusal to share bird flu samples with foreign laboratories.

WHO said that 291 cases of bird flu have been confirmed by laboratories from 2003 through April 7 with 172 deaths.
