Train crash stuns Florida

BY SUSAN KIM | BALTIMORE | April 19, 2002

A train derailment Thursday in Florida sent 14 Amtrak passenger cars off the tracks, killing four people and injuring scores of others.

Federal investigators were trying to figure out Friday why the train -- which ran between Lorton, VA and Sanford, FL -- derailed. Crews were still removing wreckage Friday morning.

The crash occurred in a remote wooded area in north Florida. The train was carrying 440 passengers and 28 crew.

Investigators discovered Friday that an engineer had hit the emergency brake shortly before the crash.
