Storms rake MS

BY SUSAN KIM | LAUREL, MS | March 16, 2002

Severe thunderstorms pounded central Mississippi late Friday and early Saturday, with a possible twister in Laurel destroying two homes and ripping the roof off a high school. Several additional homes in Laurel were damaged.

Laurel is located in Jones County where, according to Jones County emergency management, no warnings were issued before the storm struck. It formed so suddenly that normal warnings were not issued.

In addition to the damages in Laurel, there could be undiscovered rural damage, since a possible tornado was tracked from rural Rankin County into Scott County. Another was sighted moving from south of Jackson in Hinds County to north of Brandon.
