Flood survivors seek treasures

BY SUSAN KIM | NEW BRAUNFELS, Tex. | November 18, 1998

NEW BRAUNFELS, Tex. (Nov. 18, 1998) -- Three weeks ago, when a freak line-up

of storms brought 20 inches of rain to Texas in less than 24 hours, the Comal

River knocked Shirley Hayes' home four feet off its foundation. Water and mud

rose a foot from the ceiling. The 20-foot deck dropped off. Most of her

belongings were washed into her yard.

Today, 70 degrees and sunny, is a rebuild day for Hayes home. Hayes' two

sons, a volunteer, and two friends have ripped out ruined drywall and are

repairing the frame.
