Deadly tornadoes rake Texas while Oklahoma residents prepared for predicted historic snowstorm

December 26, 2015

Wicked weather hit Texas and Oklahoma Saturday night leaving behind death and destruction and knocking out power to more than 50,000 homes in the Dallas County area.

A series of strong tornadoes that traveled northeast across Texas and into Oklahoma killed at least six people and damaged or destroyed more than 100 homes. Garland and Farmersville, TX, were especially hard hit Saturday evening.

Four of the deaths occurred when cars were hit by tornadoes in Garland and two more were killed in Copeville when a gas station was destroyed.

At least two churches were seriously damaged. Harvest of Praise Church in Red Oak, south of Dallas was reported to be destroyed, and the Orvilla Church of the Nazarene was seriously damaged.

The American Red Cross opened a shelter in Red Oak, TX and shelters were also reported to be available in Rowlett.

Even as severe weather continued to be reported, forecasters from the National Weather service were predicting an historic snowstorm would hit the Oklahoma panhandle on Sunday.
