A mass shooting Friday night in Isla Vista, Calif., has left seven people dead and 13 injured, and many unanswered questions.
The suspect, Elliot Rodger, left videos and a long written statement in which he details his plans and talks about feeling alienated and enraged.
“I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you. You will finally see that I am in truth the superior one, the true alpha male,” he says in one video. “Yes, after I have annihilated every single girl in the sorority house I’ll take to the streets of Isla Vista and slay every single person I see there.”
He also outlined his intentions to kill in a 137-page document that he sent Friday night, shortly before the killings, to someone he know from an online bodybuilding forum.
His rampage spanned 10 locations and ended in a gun battle with police. Rodger and six others died.
Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said that three 9-millimeter semi-automatic handguns were recovered from the suspect’s vehicle. “We have determined that all of these weapons were legally purchased from Federally-licensed firearms dealers, and that they were all registered to the suspect,” Brown said.
Rodger’s father, Peter, and assistant director on one of the “Hunger Games” films, did not speak publicly.
“The Rodger family offers our deepest compassion and sympathies to the families involved in this terrible tragedy. We are experiencing the most inconceivable pain and our hearts go out to everyone involved,” the family said in a statement.
Attorney Alan Shifman spoke on the family’s behalf: “This is the tragedy of the most extreme. They want to send their deepest condolences to all of the victims’ families involved.”
Police met with Elliot Rodger last month after a family member expressed concerns about videos Rodger had made, in which he talked about suicide and killing people.
Police have been analyzing the videos posted by Elliot, including his most recent video title “Elliot Rodger’s Retribution,” in which he threatens violence.
At the end of his sweeping statements in the retribution video, Rodger laughs.
“You forced me to suffer all my life, now I will make you all suffer. I waited a long time for this. I’ll give you exactly what you deserve, all of you.”
