Earthquakes shake Canadian coast

Major quake and aftershock rattle nearby communities.

October 28, 2012

A major earthquake on the western Canadian coast mid-way between Seattle and Anchorage Saturday night rattled nerves and prompted a tsunami warning for coastal Canada and Alaska.

The 7.7 magnitude quake occurred in the Queen Charlotte Islands region shortly after 8 o'clock local time and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock about 10 minutes later.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the first quake struck approximately 126 miles south southwest of Prince Rupert, BC.
