1,000 Nigerian homes destroyed due to floods

Communities along the River Niger in 6 states evacuated

MAKURDI, Nigeria | September 11, 2012

At least five persons are missing and more than 1,000 homes destroyed due to flooding in the capital of Nigeria's Benue state, government officials said.

The country's National Emergency Management Agency has called for the immediate evacuation of all communities along the River Niger in six states, Nigeria's Leadership newspaper reported Tuesday.

Two of the river's dams were said to be at their highest water level in 29 years.

Since July flooding in Nigeria has killed at least 137 people and displaced more than 35,000 others, the Red Cross said.

Heavy rainfall in two northern states spilled contaminants into drinking wells, leading to a cholera outbreak that has killed at least eight people and left scores of others hospitalized.
