Flooding turn deadly in Nigeria

At least 33 dead, hundreds homeless in Nigeria

JOS, Nigeria | August 15, 2012

Heavy flooding in central Nigeria's Plateau state has killed at least 33 people and left hundreds of others homeless, a government official said.

Spokesman Abdussalam Muhammad of the National Emergency Management Agency told the BBC heavy rains have affected more than 12,000 people.

The rains triggered massive flooding that destroyed homes and washed away roads and bridges hampering rescue efforts, Muhammad said.

Nigeria's rainy season typically runs from March to September.

Last month floods killed more than 39 people near the state capital of Jos.
