6-alarm fire injures 27 firefighters

Bronx apartment fire spreads quickly, 3 residents affected

NEW YORK | July 18, 2012

A six-alarm apartment building fire in the Bronx section of New York injured 27 firefighters early Wednesday, officials said.

The fire began on an upper floor of the building, two blocks from Yankee Stadium. Firefighters reported a new roof was recently installed, and the fire quickly spread on the rubbery substance from one apartment to another.

At least 20 firefighters were treated at hospitals for minor injuries. Three residents were also injured, WABC-TV, New York, reported Wednesday.

The building, which dates from 1927, houses 185 apartments. Officials said at least a third of the apartments were destroyed by the fire and many others sustained severe water damage.
