Emilia becomes hurricane in Pacific

Emilia is a Category 1 hurricane and is expected to strengthen

MIAMI | July 9, 2012

Emilia strengthened into a hurricane in the eastern Pacific Monday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

At 5 a.m. EDT, Emilia was about 760 miles south of the southern tip of Baja California early Monday, carrying maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Emilia is a Category 1 hurricane but was expected to strengthen into a major hurricane by Tuesday.

While Emilia gains strength, meteorologists say Hurricane Daniel has started to weaken as it moves over cooler waters about 1,270 miles west-southwest of Baja California.

Daniel was forecast to continue moving west and gradually weaken to a tropical storm Monday night and a tropical depression by Wednesday night, the National Hurricane Center said.
