School shooting troubles NYC

BY SUSAN KIM | NEW YORK | January 15, 2002

NEW YORK (Jan. 15, 2002) -- In a city already beleaguered by tragedy, a school shooting Tuesday caused injury and further emotional trauma. Two students were wounded at the Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Manhattan, near Lincoln Center.

A fellow student who has been taken into custody allegedly opened fire. The school was locked down by SWAT teams who searched the building. Some students were locked in the school for up to an hour, with others leaving the building before it was secured.

The two injured boys were taken to a nearby hospital where they were in serious condition Tuesday.

Martin Luther King Jr. High School has an enrollment of some 3,000 students. The school was equipped with metal detectors and X-ray machines, which teams were examining for malfunction.
