KANSAS CITY (UPI) | May 26, 2011

More powerful storms and tornadoes pounded the south and central United States Thursday days after a EF-5 twister flattened Joplin, Mo.

A tornado was spotted near Overland Park, Kan., in the Kansas City area around 11 p.m. Wednesday but did not touch down inside the city limits, Accuweather.com reported. A twister injured 15 to 25 people in Sedalia, Mo. Wednesday afternoon, but there were no fatalities. At least two people were hurt by a storm cluster in the Mississippi Valley region to the south and east. Tornadoes damaged homes in the towns of Ellsinore and Silva, Mo.

Accuweather said more than 80 tornadoes were reported in 10 states from Texas to Ohio through Wednesday evening, but early warnings may have prevented deaths. The storms battered many areas with large hail and damaging high winds.

Storms caused heavy damage to half a dozen homes and buildings in west Memphis and cut electricity to 6,000 Memphis Light, Gas and Water customers, The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal said.

High winds leveled two mobile homes and blew a third off its foundation in Monroe County in south-central Indiana, Wednesday night, and two injuries were reported, the Bloomington (Ind.) Herald-Times said. More than 63,000 Duke Energy customers were without power.

Strong straight-line winds and thunderstorms moved across Missouri into southern and central Illinois toppling trees and causing property damage.

Rain and hail pounded the St. Louis area and heavy rain drenched Chicago.

At least one tornado was spotted by a TV helicopter 10 miles southwest of Chico, Calif.
