PA, NC see flooding

BY SUSAN KIM | PHILADELPHIA, PA | June 17, 2001

The storm dumped nine inches of rain in the Philadelpia area, causing several apartment buildings and homes to be evacuated.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike was closed between Norristown and Fort Washington.

Many vehicles were damaged and power was still out for thousands of homes Sunday. No injuries were reported, according to

emergency management officials.

In eastern North Carolina, in the town of Speed, voluntary evacuations took place because of rising floodwaters. Speed is just east

of Rocky Mount. Forecasters said the Tar River at Tarboro was expected to crest at 20.2 feet Monday, 1.2 feet above the 19-foot

flood level.

Flood warnings were issued throughout that area Sunday.

Allison also drenched parts of Virginia with up to four inches of rain.
