Deadly storms roar across South

Spate of severe weather damages buildings, cuts power to tens of thousands

BALTIMORE | April 5, 2011


At least eight people were killed Monday as severe weather stormed across southern U.S. states, damaging homes and businesses, and cutting off power to tens of thousands.

Most of the 184 employees of the Hopkinsville, Ky, TGASK plant escaped serious injury when the automobile parts manufacturing facility was hit by a tornado. In Ballard County, Sheriff Cary Batts said a man was seriously injured when his house collapsed onto him. According to the National Weather Service at least two tornadoes hit the county.

According to CNN, one person was killed in Mississippi, six were killed in Georgia and one died in Tennessee.

The National Weather Service said Tuesday it had received at least 600 reports of severe weather on Monday and Tuesday including nearly 20 possible tornadoes.
