Red Flag warnings posted in CA

Wildfire threat grows as humidity drops and temperatures rise

BY ZACHARY HOFFMAN | BALTIMORE | August 27, 2009

Instead of relief, red flag warnings have been issued for parts of California stretching from the San Francisco Bay Area to the mountains and foothills of Los Angeles.

The red flag warnings signify critical fire weather conditions due to humidity levels in the single digits, strong winds with afternoon temperatures nearing 100 degrees and extremely dry foliage, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

A high pressure system sitting over western California will cause these conditions to persist through Friday. Sunday may bring lower temperatures, but not soon enough for firefighters already battling wildfires across California that are plagued with blazes.

Two new fires sprang up Wednesday in Monterey County and Mariposa County, adding to those already burning across the entire state. Many are nearly contained, but persistent dry conditions and strong winds create an explosive potential.
