Burning bans issued in TX

Firefighters responding to increasing numbers of wildfires as threat grows.

January 25, 2009

Texas authorities issued burn bans after weather conditions turned optimum for spontaneous wildfires. On Thursday and Friday, fire officials have responded to more than 45 intense wildfires. The fires burned more than 10,000 acres as of Friday afternoon.

An incoming cold front, including high winds and record low humidity, are creating the hazard this week.

According to the Texas Wildfire Service, there are ways to protect a home during a wildfire. Residents should keep gasoline away from occupied buildings, as well as objects that burn easily, like firewood, picnic tables and stacked lumber. Families should also discuss emergency plans if a fire nears the home.
