Texas wildfires threaten homes

Despite tropical moisture, wildfires continue to threaten much of Texas.

FLORENCE, TX | August 8, 2008

A wildfire in Williamson County near Florence has consumed 2200 acres and continues to threaten 125 homes. An evacuation order was issued for 50 of the homes.

Firefighters called in airtankers to help with the firefighting efforts. By mid-day Friday, the fire was 35 percent contained.

It was one of eight fires reported in the state Friday.

Despite some drought relief from rains that accompanied Tropical Storm Edouard, the impact is not expected to be long-lived according to the Texas Forest Service.
