Powerful earthquake hits Russian island

BY SUSAN KIM | Baltimore, MD | August 5, 2000

The quake, which measured 7.0 on the Richter scale, damaged the region's main power station and

communications from the scene are sketchy. Most of the injuries occurred when roofs collapsed. Power

remained out to most residents on Saturday afternoon.

The quake set off a mudslide that left a 13-foot layer of mud blocking a main road.

Many American-based relief groups, while they may not have funded programs operating in Russia, do

have partnerships with local pastors who are conducting mission work or coordinating with community

programs.
