Smoke prompts warnings in Argentina

Airport, major highways closed near Buenos Aires due to poor visibility

April 19, 2008

Farmers clearing land for cattle grazing have been blamed for causing an increasingly serious potential health disaster near the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires. However, farmers -- who had been on strike earlier this month -- say they are being unfairly targeted by the government.

Multiple fires on grasslands near the capital began about a week ago and firefighters are now battling the flames that have spread across thousands of acres. Emergency officials have closed a small airport and several major highways citing concerns for poor visibility.

Health officials have warned residents to stay indoors with their windows closed until the fires are out or the winds change direction.
