Major disaster declaration expected along the northern coast of New South Wales.

January 5, 2008

About 400 people were evacuated from their homes in New South Wales Friday and thousands more may be at risk the State Emergency Service (SES) said Saturday.

Torrential rain in recent days has created flooding along the Tweed and Richmond Rivers near the north coast. The government is expected to issue a disaster declaration for areas impacted by the storms.

"We are expecting as the flood peak moves down the Tweed River towards Tweed Heads that there will be several thousand people at risk of potential evacuation," as spokesperson for the SES told the press.
