More than 175,000 people were forced from their homes this week following flash flooding in east and central Sri Lanka.

A reservoir failed Monday in the eastern district of Batticaloa following heavy rains. More than 40,000 families were forced to leave their homes according to emergency officials.

This flooding comes on the heels of floods the week before in the eastern district of Ampara that forced 20,000 from their homes.

Located on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, Batticaloa was devastated following the tsunami that hit three years ago today.
