Tsunami warning is lifted

7.1 quake hits off Indonesia.

JAKARTA, Indonesia | October 24, 2007

A tsunami warning was lifted early Thursday (Indonesian time) for coasts in the Indian Ocean following an earthquake measuring 7.1 that struck west of Sumatra, Indonesia.

The warning had been issued by the Indonesian meteorological agency.

The earthquake was centered 84 miles from Bengkulu and some 435 miles from Jakarta. According to the U.S .Geological Survey, it was a shallow quake.

The quake struck at 4:02 a.m. local time (5:02 p.m. EDT Wednesday).

More than 20 people were killed following a series of powerful quakes in the Bengkulu region last month.
