A mine explosion in eastern Kentucky killed five miners, according to reports from federal officials.

A mine explosion in eastern Kentucky killed five miners, according to reports from federal officials.

The blast occurred early Saturday morning at the Darby Mine Number One in Harlan County. A maintenance shift was on duty and no production was underway at the time. One miner was able to walk out of the mine.

No cause had been determined by mid-morning Saturday as state and federal investigations continue. The underground mine is operated by Kentucky Darby LLC.
