Four more Alabama churches burned this week, adding to the five damaged or destroyed by fire last week. Police suspect arson in all the cases.

The three newest fires burned churches in Pickens, Sumter and Green counties in western Alabama, though investigators are not yet sure when the fires occurred.

The five churches damaged or destroyed last Friday were all in rural Bibb County, and three were Baptist. Three were destroyed and two were damaged by the fires.

Police now say the church blaze in neighboring Chilton County last Thursday was not arson-related.

Investigators are unsure whether race is a factor in this series of burnings as it was in 1996, when another string of church burnings occurred in Alabama and neighboring states.
