At least nine tornadoes touched down in central Iowa Saturday, damaging at least 45 homes. Strong winds were expected to continue through Saturday night.

Most damage occurred in southern Woodward, where forecasters were giving a preliminary estimate of an F3 tornado. Additional damage was reported in the Boxholm and Pilot Mound areas of Boone County.

The town of Stratford was evacuated because of a major gas leak. The Startford Lutheran Church was able to open its doors as an emergency shelter.

At least 13,000 people were without power.

In Ames, emergency officials evacuated football fans from the open stands as they waited for the start of the Iowa State Cyclones' game.

No injuries were immediately reported.
