CA storms continue

Powerful storms continued to move through California, causing more mudslides and evacuations.

Powerful storms continued to move through California, causing more mudslides and evacuations.

Ten feet of mud flowed through at least one home in Hacienda Heights, a suburb east of Los Angeles that was partially evacuated. Mudslides and flooding chased about 30 people from 11 homes in Glendale, north of downtown Los Angeles, officials said. Three homes on an unstable hill were evacuated in nearby Pasadena and up to 10 homes were flooded in Fullerton.

Dozens of homes were evacuated or red-tagged - marked as uninhabitable - because they were threatened by sliding hillsides.

A manmade lake in San Diego County came within an inch of spilling over a dam for the first time since 1998. But the lake empties into a river and the overflow was not a threat, authorities said.

In the coastal community of La Conchita, where a landslide killed 10 people last month, six of the 39 people still living there elected to leave during the night because of the heavy rain and a steady flow of mud on the bluffs behind the town. Warnings had been issued earlier and the community about 70 miles north of Los Angeles was described as a ghost town Saturday after other residents moved out.

Northern California also was hit by severe thunderstorms this week, spawning two small tornadoes that touched down northwest of Sacramento.

At least six deaths have been blamed on the series of storms that began Sunday. People have been killed by avalanches, traffic accidents, falling trees and flooding.

Los Angeles has received more than six inches of rain from this line of storms. The region is experiencing its fifth wettest season on record.
