Hurricane Juan hit Nova Scotia Sunday night, according to the Canadian Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Juan hit Nova Scotia Sunday night, according to the Canadian Hurricane Center.

Two deaths were attributed to the storm, which hit the Halifax area hard. There buildings were damaged, and the storm downed trees and caused widespread power outages. Emergency management officials there were assessing damages Monday.

According to reports from Halifax officials, an apartment complex partially collapsed, and several hundred people were in shelters.

Wind gusts of 89 mph were reported at Halifax International Airport.

By Monday Juan had been downgraded to a tropical storm.

Nova Scotia declared a state of emergency Sunday.
