Texas could see a hurricane this weekend.

BY DISASTER NEWS NETWORK | BROWNSVILLE, Texas | August 16, 2003

Texas could see a hurricane this weekend as Tropical Storm Erika continued to churn and strengthen Saturday, when it could also make landfall before weakening rapidly.

A hurricane warning was posted from Brownsville to Baffin Bay in Texas. Mexico posted a warning from La Pesca that stretched to the U.S. border.

At Port O’Connor, Texas – where Hurricane Claudette came ashore July 15 – a hurricane watch was posted.

Forecasters predicted Erika – with 60 mph winds as of Friday evening -- would be a Category 1 hurricane by Saturday morning.

Residents were told to expect high surf and up to six inches of rain. On Friday night, Erika could bring isolated tornadoes to parts of Texas, and residents were also warned to beware of flash flooding and mudslides.
