A freight train derailed and slammed into Commerce, a suburb east of Los Angeles, where it destroyed at least two homes and damaged several others, according to a dispatcher with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The line of cars got out of control at a switching yard, then rolled 30 miles downhill toward Los Angeles before derailing, slamming wreckage and spilled lumber into homes, and taking down power lines.

Crews were still cleaning up a pile of wrecked cars Friday evening.

There were four people with minor injuries, and rescue workers were searching for people who might have been trapped.

The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched investigators.
