New twisters hit KY, IL

Capping off a week of record-breaking tornadoes, new twisters hopped a 100-mile swath across Kentucky and Illinois late Saturday and early Sunday.

Capping off a week of record-breaking tornadoes, new twisters hopped a 100-mile swath across Kentucky and Illinois late Saturday and early Sunday.

In Illinois, the town of Rineyville, some 40 miles south of Louisville, was hardest hit, according to reports from Hardin County emergency management. The town of Harrodsburg in Mercer County, 30 miles southwest of Lexington, also took a direct hit.

In Illinois, tornadoes roared along a corridor that damaged at least 20 towns. The small town of South Pekin was among the hardest hit with an estimated 80 to 100 homes damaged, according to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

The town of Lima, population 125 people, was also affected. Nearly every home in that town sustained damaged. The towns of Ipava, Morton, Eureka, Roanoke and Benson were also significantly affected, according to preliminary reports.
