An unusually strong tornado struck the port of Limassol in Cyprus Monday, injuring 28 people and causing severe damage to businesses, according to police reports.

The twister, which also toppled trees and power lines, was an unusual occurrence for a Mediterranean island.

A tornado also hit the coastal area of Larnaca, damaging homes.

The severe storms delayed arrival of a British naval task force that was scheduled to gather near Cyprus Monday before heading to the Gulf.
